History of the Aircraft

“The Czechoslovakian L-39 was built as the successor to their earlier trainer, the L-29 Delfin. Design work began in 1966, and the first prototype made its initial flight on 4 November 1968. The idea of the design was to marry an efficient, powerful turbofan engine to a sleek, streamlined fuselage, resulting in a strong, economical performer which would become the next standard jet trainer for the Warsaw Pact. Full-scale production was delayed until late 1972 due to apparent problems with the design of the air intakes, but these difficulties were overcome and the type went on to be a great success with the Soviet, Czech and East German air forces, among others.” – http://www.l39.com/faq.html

There are over 260 L-39s currently registered within the United States under private ownership.

SC Simulations Simulator

Ed Hardy of the Patriots Jet Team invited me down to their home plate to pick through the aircraft cockpit in great detail. Spent the entire day documenting a fully restored L-39 and a relatively unrestored aircraft straight out of a field in Czech. (Tail, wings and engine were over a rather large area of the hanger.) Really had a great time and Ed is a massive wealth of knowledge on the L-39 and its systems. I really appreciate Ed taking a day out of his busy schedule to allow me access to the aircrafts and for Fry’s Electronics sponsoring them to allow them to have the Jet team. They have 5 flyable L-39s and are restoring the sixth now, so they will have a full six flight team for next airshow season. If the Patriots are flying near you...it is an amazing show. I think they have the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels beat as far as the technical show goes. Fantastic routine.

I can’t wait to get rolling on this project as the L-39 is a wonderful warbird that is just plain sexy.

I have to say I've got a lot to learn about flying. After two nights I can ramp start from memory and I only occasionally turn the wrong way during the taxi. I've even got the bird airborne (only once leaving the gear on the ground.) I've got to learn the basics around air traffic patterns and properly using my instruments to fly routes. I only understand about 1/3 of what's on the DED. Man is it going to be a fun ride.

I'm reading through the Allied Forces manual and dash-34 on open falcon. Anyone have any other suggestions on reading or order of things to learn?

It's about time that I introduce myself. I'm a recent flight simulation addict and a extreme newb in regards to aviation. I've always admired from a distance and had boy hood dreams of flying jets. Unfortunately bad eyesight ensured that would never become a reality so it fell far by the wayside. A few years ago I convinced the wife to buy me a RC Helicopter for Christmas which refueled my interest, but I had moved away from any PC gaming. Myself and a few friends where bored with our current set of games and ended up picking up ArmA2. This led me to digging back out my X45 in order to fly. Once I had it out I remembered the pain of managing a HOTAS and keyboard / mouse on a computer desk. This lead to a flurry of activity in the garage and what the wife referred to as a chair in a box.

Of course as always when getting a new computer game there is a requisite hardware upgrade. While at the computer store I ran across DCS Black Shark. Seeing as I have always had a fascination with helicopters I picked it up. I was in love immediately, and started combing through the eagle dynamics forums. I ran across a forum post by DickDastardly which really got me excited. It was a screenshot and link to his touch-buddy profile for blackshark. A few days later after some extreme luck on e-bay I had a 15" touch screen monitor running the profile. This led to an evolution of my pit.

<img src="http://www.scsimulations.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=80&d=1275288134&thumb=1" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version
About this time Eagle Dynamics released info on how to access state data for buttons, switches and indicators. Being a computer progammer and being frustrated by sync problems with this setup, I started work on a replacement to TouchBuddy. This culminated in my working with DickDastardly graphics to release TouchPal. Shortly after this FLIM reached out to me to work with SCSimulations.

I've been pretty heads down over the last month or so working on some new and exciting software, which hopefully will be revealed shortly. I've also been planning a true KA-50 pit and have built prototype cyclic and collectives for. I'll be re-posting those threads soon, as well as my latest progress.

Anyways enough about me for now. Welcome to the new SCS site. I look forward to working with all of you on many exciting projects!
